Andres Velasco on The London Consensus: Economics for the 21st century

Andrés Velasco is Professor of Public Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where he previously served as Dean of the School of Public Policy. He served as Chile’s Minister of Finance from 2006 to 2010. He is co-editor of The London Consensus: Economic Principles for the 21st Century (2025), a collaborative initiative involving over 50 leading economists and experts, led by the LSE. It offers an alternative to the Washington Consensus, advocating a balanced approach between market mechanisms and state action to address 21st century challenges such as climate change, inequality and growth.  See his bio here.

Professor Velasco was in conversation with CDE executive director Ann Bernstein to discuss how the London Consensus moves development debates forward and what countries like South Africa should learn from it.

For over 30 years, CDE has influenced policy in South Africa’s democracy. We have established ourselves as a unique policy think tank and prominent public ‘voice’ promoting enterprise and development in South Africa and emerging markets. We have built a wide network throughout the country and with leading global experts and think tanks, especially in democratic developing countries.

CDE’s flagship project, AGENDA 2024: Priorities for South Africa’s new government, based on extensive policy work and collaboration with experts, business leaders, former public servants and academics, sets out to answer what is by far the most important question facing South Africa: What can a new government do to get the country back on track after 15 years of stagnation and decline?
