Fixing the governance failures that have brought Joburg to its knees must start with appointing capable and competent people to senior positions vital for turning the city around.

Please join us for the online launch of Kickstarting Delivery – Joburg’s Mission Critical Jobs, the third report in CDE’s Johannesburg Matters series.

Legislative ambiguity coupled with coalition politics has widened the door to patronage, cadre deployment and political interference in appointments and contracts in Johannesburg’s administration with terrible results.

Turning this situation around will be difficult but absolutely essential if the City is to be reformed.

Critical questions will include: who is appointed and who is retained; how appointments are made and on what criteria; whether senior people placed in mission critical positions are given the authority to do their jobs without political interference, and held accountable for results.

• Ann Bernstein, CDE’s executive director, will present the CDE report’s key findings and  recommendations
• Dr Ivor Chipkin, co-founder and director, New South Institute and author of The Crisis of Johannesburg: An agenda for institutional reform (2026), a CDE commissioned paper, will talk about their research.
