We’re adding 1,000 to the unemployment queue daily

CDE executive director Ann Bernstein joined SAfm’s Morning Brief to discuss South Africa’s dire unemployment crisis and the ineffectiveness of current employment schemes. She called on the state to be far bolder in implementing structural reforms to drive economic growth. Bernstein says “Between 2008 and 2025, our labour force grew by 42 percent, but total employment grew by only 15 percent. That means about 1000 South Africans joined the unemployment queue every single day for the last 17 years.”. The conversation follows the release of CDE’s latest report, South Africa’s Unemployment Catastrophe: A call for urgent action.
