Urgent reforms necessary to unlock jobs in South Africa

CDE executive director Ann Bernstein joined Gugulethu Mfuphi on Kaya Biz to discuss South Africa’s persistent unemployment crisis and the solutions needed to address it. While acknowledging that public employment programmes create some opportunities, she noted that they remain limited in scale and come at a cost to taxpayers. Bernstein emphasised that “the only way to get jobs of the scale South Africa needs is to achieve high growth that creates a more labour-absorbing economy.” The conversation follows the release of CDE’s latest report, South Africa’s Unemployment Catastrophe: A call for urgent action.
