Professional leadership is key to fixing Johannesburg

CDE executive director Ann Bernstein spoke to Mandy Wiener on 702 about the third report, Kickstarting Delivery – Joburg’s Mission Critical jobs in CDE’s Johannesburg Matters series, which focuses on the leadership and management of the city’s key entities. Bernstein argued that political bargaining has undermined professional appointments, with senior positions and boards too often becoming bargaining chips in coalition negotiations. She said a new administration must prioritise identifying mission-critical positions and appointing capable, experienced professionals, warning that without the right people leading Johannesburg’s institutions, meaningful reform and improved service delivery will remain out of reach.
