Ann Bernstein, executive director of CDE, featured in an eNCA report on the Johannesburg CBD clean-up operations, which have had severe consequences for informal street traders. She argued that such approaches do little to address South Africa’s unemployment crisis, stating, “we need an enabling environment for people that work in informal businesses, and the city’s government needs to understand that”. This feature comes after the release of CDE’s latest report, South Africa’s Unemployment Catastrophe: A call for urgent action.
