In a recent episode of Podcasts from the Edge, CDE’s Executive Director Ann Bernstein welcomed the recent run of positive economic news, from a stronger rand and improved medium-term budget to progress on rail and port reforms, but warned that South Africa is “approaching the corner, not turning it yet.” She noted that unemployment has risen by about 200 000 people over the past year and that the criminal justice system remains marked by “chaos and corruption,” emphasising that recognising progress must go hand-in-hand with sustained urgency on reform.
