A call for bold action on unemployment

CDE executive director Ann Bernstein spoke to eNCA’s Dan Moyane, calling on government to implement urgent reforms to tackle South Africa’s 33.2% unemployment rate. Bernstein noted that South Africa performs poorly compared to other middle-income economies, which typically employ around 60% of their working-age population, while the country employs just below that. “It means we have 12.5 million people who want to work and cannot find a job. We cannot think of a crisis that is more important than this,” she said. The interview followed the launch of CDE’s latest report, South Africa’s Unemployment Catastrophe: A call for urgent action.
