Johannesburg’s decline risks becoming a national economic catastrophe

CDE executive director Ann Bernstein discusses CDE’s newest report, warning that Johannesburg is at risk of becoming a “failed city”. She highlights crumbling infrastructure, financial pressures and extreme political instability, including the fact that the city has had nine mayors in ten years. Bernstein emphasises that, with Johannesburg home to 70% of South Africa’s corporate head offices, its continued decline would have serious consequences for the national economy. She argues that stable political leadership is essential to turn the city around, including fixing entities such as City Power and improving water services. The interview follows the release of Joburg in Jeopardy, the first report in CDE’s Johannesburg Matters series.
