Speaking on SAFM’s Market Update with Moneyweb, CDE executive director Ann Bernstein argued that for South African state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to improve their performance, they need to operate in a more competitive environment. She emphasized that with skilled individuals providing oversight and proper management, these companies could become assets to the state, rather than liabilities. She says “in the medium-term the country needs a highly skilled small team or department, that understands competition, private sector financing and delivery which we are not getting, to manage SOE’s”. This interview comes after the release of CDE’s latest Agenda2024 publication, ACTION SIX: Solve the SOE challenge.
